Gravel, dust and Pollution

Alas this one too didn’t prove to be durable enough… She muttered, while looking at her shoes, which were torn due to ware and tare. She was a spot seller, her job was to sell merchandise from door to door, from nowhere to everywhere. It was really very difficult to get another pair, her resources were limited, widowed and a single mother, she always tried to cut her expense to sustain in this rigid universe.

Rigid in the terms of her unpleasant routine, disembarking daily to earn herself bread and butter, there were few options, especially when one had to walk miles on the feet. The continuously developing infrastructure, brings employment or more realistically resembles fortune, but there are some consequences; for environment and the people.

In many developing countries it is accustomed to bash the civic sense, ignoring overall well-being, hygiene and accessibility. In fact they ruin the pristine & lush plantations to make their way, to fulfill their so called; development ambitions. Compared to developed countries, when they complete a construction project, they flee with the endless stockpile of debris, gravel and hazardous chemicals, just to save their one cent. And this leftover junk brings epidemic odd to daily life of ordinary. The foremost hindrance is for pedestrian; as they are denied their right of the way; when the developers use the footpath to store inventory of raw material.

One of the most damaging factor of road dust is its effect on people’s respiratory health; especially that of young children. The dust from gravel is often fine enough to pass into the lungs and cause serious irritation. This also has a particularly detrimental effect on people with existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma.

Dust also causes an increased level of danger on roads because of its propensity to obscure vision. The plumes of dust that are blown up by a moving vehicle will block or partially interfere with the view of other motorists, causing increased motoring accidents. Even these perilous particles can cause severe annoyance to walker’ eyeballs; creating a toxic membrane; which may lead to complicated sight problems.

But the solution already exists; proactive, eager and responsible behavior can make room for everyone. If everyone tries to stick to its boundary; then there would not be a single problem. There is no need to encroach sidewalks; the hawkers should stick to their designated marketplace. Similarly builders would first have to make way for their material; have the proper utilization & disposal system in place; and then start their project. Proper layout can save them time and money & serve as a delight for living-being. The authorities also need to be vigilant, so the ordinary can heave a sigh of relief.
